Important Dates
APPOINTMENT - 8/21/00
This is the day that Class 332 was officially appointed to the Academy. This is the first day of a 32 week training program. Recruits are not police officers. They have no police authority and are not permitted to carry a weapon.
CERTIFICATION - 2/16/01
The recruits who have passed the required courses are sworn as police officers. Their training is not completed, but they can now carry weapons and perform all police activities. Certification precedes graduation because the recruits must be certified before they can participate in the field training that is part of the curriculum at the Academy.
FIELD TRAINING - 2/19/01 to 3/16/01
During this four-week period, recruits are assigned to the city's twenty-three patrol districts. They work regular shifts and perform all the standard functions of a police officer except that they must be accompanied by a supervisor while on patrol.
SCENARIOS - 3/26/01 to 3/30/01
Scenarios are re-enactments of real crimes and other typical situations that require police action.
The roles of the suspects and citizens are played by experienced police officers. The locations are vacant houses and buildings at the former Philadelphia Navy Yard. At the beginning of each scenario, recruits are told only what a dispatcher is likely to give them over the police radio. The recruits are then expected to respond to the situation according to the training they received at the Academy. Each recruit participates in three scenarios each day and is critiqued after each scenario.
GRADUATION - 4/09/01
This is the day they have all been working toward. The week after graduation every member of Class 332 will be working as a police officer.
